Ayatollah Arafi Condemns Death Sentence for Sheikh Al-Ma'touq: A Verdict That Tramples on Muslims' Religious Identity and Rights

In a statement, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, Director of Iran's Islamic Seminaries, strongly condemned the unjust and illegal death sentence issued against prominent Kuwaiti cleric Sheikh Hussein Al-Ma'touq, calling on Kuwaiti authorities to immediately review the verdict in line with the principle of Islamic brotherhood and prevent what he described as a "catastrophe and a miscarriage of justice."

Hawzah News Agency- The full text of the statement is as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

"Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one — it is as if he had saved mankind entirely..." (Quran 5:32)

At a time when the Islamic world faces unprecedented challenges from the widespread, organized conspiracies of the enemies of Islam — above all the arrogant American regime and the Zionist regime — the news of the unjust and merciless verdict handed down by courts in the region against people, the youth and prominent scholars — in particular the unfair ruling by Kuwaiti authorities sentencing the indefatigable mujahid Hojatoleslam Sheikh Hussein Al-Ma'touq, a distinguished scholar and servant of the Kuwaiti people — has deeply pained the hearts of Muslims and sparked a wave of anger and sorrow across the Islamic Ummah and among scholarly centers and seminaries in Iran and around the world.

This move — carried out with blatant disregard for legal and humanitarian standards and for the elevated status of religious scholars — goes beyond a judicial verdict: it constitutes an assault on the religious identity and rights of Muslims and Shias, and a blatant attempt to weaken the influence and dignity of Islamic scholars.

Citing the noble verse "whoever kills a soul... it is as if he had slain mankind entirely," and recalling the truth that injustice against believers — who are all brothers gathered under the banner of unity and in the shadow of the word of God Almighty — is an unforgivable sin, and that their sanctity and dignity must be preserved, I, in the name of the Islamic seminaries, the grand sources of emulation (maraji'), esteemed professors and affiliated institutions, while condemning this unjust treatment and the unlawful verdict, stress that the government and responsible officials in Kuwait must, in accordance with the principle of Islamic brotherhood, immediately review this verdict and — respecting the fundamental rights of the noble Muslim nation, particularly the Shias of Kuwait, and honoring the scholarly and religious standing of prominent figures — prevent this catastrophe and this flight from justice.

It is also important to note that any discriminatory treatment of great religious scholars not only violates individual and social rights but can also pave the way for divisions and discord among Islamic countries — precisely what the enemies of Islam seek, and what all Islamic governments and nations must avoid.

I ask God Almighty for the awakening of Islamic governments and the victory of the Islamic Ummah over the American-Zionist enemies.

Alireza Arafi
Director of the Islamic Seminaries
